Case Study: Comprehensive Trucking Coverage

Pennsylvania-based Kinard Trucking has found great success in it’s first 40 years in business due to a strong commitment to providing the best possible customer service available. Currently, Kinard operates over 175 power units including two dedicated fl eets, which typically carry corrugated and paper products. While they specialize in truckload shipments on the East Coast, their specialty division services the 48 contiguous states and southern Canada.

Kinard relies on KCI for all of its trucking insurance, including workers compensation, its auto/fleet liability, and health. Kinard is part of all three groups spearheaded by KCI: Carrier Solutions Risk Retention Group (CSRRG) for group health insurance; Elite Transportation Risk Retention Group (ETRRG) for fleet liability coverage; and PETRO Trust for workers compensation. All three feature dedicated service teams that work closely with their members. Kinard depends on KCI’s swift and responsive customer service. For example, Kinard recently had a specialty shipment of 30 high-end motorcycles that needed to be transported on one trailer. Their standard coverage limit for a trailer is $500,000. However, each motorcycle needed to be insured for at least $25,000, requiring $1 million in coverage. Kinard turned to KCI for the extra coverage, and within 24 hours, KCI met the requirement. “We are pleased to have such a great working relationship with KCI on all our insurance programs,” says Barry Wertz, Safety Director for Kinard Trucking. “Their customer service is excellent and the response time to any of our questions is rapid. KCI’s insurance expertise and proactive initiatives help us mitigate and reduce claims.”

Kinard and KCI have been partners for several years and, recently, Kinard became part of the CSRRG healthcare insurance group. CSRRG is less expensive than traditional healthcare programs, provides uniform coverage for all employees, and allows wellness programs to be implemented to help curb costs, says Wertz. “Offering unique and innovative solutions for superior coverage and benefi ts, at reasonable costs, helps our customers concentrate on growing their business,” says Jerry Stechmann, KCI Chief Operating Officer. According to Wertz, Kinard has seen a reduction in expenditures through KCI’s other programs. “Since implementing KCI’s PETRO Trust program, Kinard has reduced costs by 25 percent. As long as we keep our claims down, we see a return on investment, lower premiums, and dividends. That ROI is money other insurance companies would pocket,” says Wertz.
