Trucking Insurance and Risk Management: A Case Study

L&H Trucking Inc. built its business by exceeding its customers’ expectations and upholding the highest standard for safe operations within the transportation industry. The company prides itself on being responsible to its local community, its employees, and to its business. When L&H Trucking decided they needed a better approach to their Trucking Insurance and Risk Management, they turned to KCI for innovative insurance programs to help the company reduce costs yet maintain its superior service, reliability, and safety record. L&H Trucking now uses KCI for its Workers Compensation and Auto Liability as well as Cargo, Umbrella, and Warehouse insurance coverage. After months of due diligence, and a careful review of their programs, L&H decided to make a mid-term switch to KCI. “We conducted a two-month process to review everything and essentially KCI had a significantly lower premium than what we were paying,” says Ernie Malkin, CFO for L&H Trucking. “In this economy, we have to make smart financial decisions. We realized huge savings when we made the switch to KCI, saving between 20 to 30 percent annually,” he adds. Malkin says the unique KCI program structure helped them lower their deductible and lower their costs, while receiving excellent customer service from KCI. L&H Trucking uses several KCI programs including: PETRO Trust for Workers Compensation; Elite Transportation Risk Reduction Group (ETRRG) Auto Liability; and Carrier Solutions Risk Retention Group (CSRRG) for group health insurance. Switching insurance mid-term required some retraining for L&H staff. However, Malkin says, his staff only needed to familiarize themselves with the KCI team and who they needed to call with questions. “They are a great team to work with and we’re saving tons of money,” notes Malkin. “They create the solution that’s best for your company, and they’re willing to think outside of the box to make that happen.”

A Few Critical Aspects of Improved Trucking ROI

It is crucial to utilize a variance scorecard when attempting to improve trucking ROI. A variance scorecard is simply a tool in which a company calculates the difference between performance goals and actual performance. It is usually best to organize these figures by terminal. Accurately recording and analyzing mileage, operating costs, idling time, and other cost-related factors will contribute enormously to gaining insight into areas in which a company can improve its trucking ROI.

Once a variance scorecard has been created for each terminal, successes and opportunities can be identified for the company as a whole, but more importantly broken down on a terminal-by-terminal basis. Drilling down to this level of specificity allows greatly enhanced accountability, which contributes to identification and improvement of egregious expenses in a trucking organization.

Trucking Insurance & Trucking Risk Case Study

The current economy presents challenges to all businesses. This is especially true for any entity involved in the transportation industry. The insurance sector is no exception in the need to adapt in this economy. To succeed you must know the industry and your customer’s operations. Ultimately you must provide value to your client beyond just a competitively priced policy.

Our close working relationship with KCI for many years has proven to be a successful endeavor. I believe this is the case because we have a common approach to our customers. We are pleased that we can deliver the service that the team at KCI views as being absolutely paramount for their trucking accounts. Strong competitive products are enhanced by KCI’s closely working together with our underwriting, claims, and risk control experts to provide the customized insurance programs needed. In addition, KCI has facilitated the building of relationships between our team and their customers.

Encouraging direct communication is an effective way for the insurance carrier to get a better appreciation of the policyholder’s operations and better serve their needs. Travelers Inland Marine Managing Account Executive Scott Campbell has been invited to meet the majority of our policyholders, which has developed strong ties between KCI, the insured and us. This has also led to deeper involvement with our claims, risk control, and special investigations teams who are focused on this industry. Introducing this network has brought value – significant cost savings are made possible by preventing claims and helping the cargo arrive without incident.

Through the years I have seen the reasons why KCI’s customers have chosen them…not only to protect their financial assets, but to also keep their operations moving smoothly and competitively. They are the same reasons why Travelers associates ourselves with the group of professionals at KCI and will continue our commitment to the transportation industry. Together we are making a difference.
